How to Change the Facebook Link Preview Sharing Logo From Your Squarespace Website
So, you’ve just polished up your new site and set it live.
You head over to Facebook, excited to share it with the world.
But your logo is looking all kinds of funky - or maybe it’s showing a big blank space. It’s not a good look at all!
Today I want to share a solution to this problem that I see pop up a lot. Whether it’s in my inbox or in Facebook Groups, this question is surely one of the most frequently asked. Yet the solution on Squarespace is surprisingly simple to change the image that appears when sharing a link on Facebook or any other social media platform.
Here’s how to add a photo to your Social Sharing Logo area on your Squarespace site. I’ll also run you through the best practises for your image and even how to use a handy tool to help Facebook pick up on your new image. Let’s go!
How to Add it
A Social Sharing Logo is essentially a thumbnail that social media sites use when you post your website link on a social media channel like Facebook. They’re super easy to add in on Squarespace, here’s how:
For 7.1 Design > Social Sharing
For 7.0 Design > Logo & Title > Social Sharing Logo
You’ll be able to upload your image here. You might want to use a lifestyle image, a portfolio piece or evevn a simple logo for this. Here’s a peek at mine…
How to size it
Getting the size right is super important. We don’t want awkward cut-off text or people missing the tops of their heads!
Facebook displays links in two ways, one for posts and another for comments. Here are the two examples.
So the comments one is set to square whereas the post version is a shorter landscape.
As you can see from my Squarespace settings, I’ve picked an image that works well as it is (for the Facebook posts) and also as a square (for the Facebook comments). It’s important to keep in mind the areas that will get cut off when switching between a post and comment.
With this in mind, I tend to recommend using a square as your Social Sharing Logo. When uploading, keep in mind that the top and bottom quarters of your square image won’t be seen on the comment posts. Essentially, make sure that there is nothing important in the top and bottom quarters of your image.
You’ll want to save your image as a JPG or non-transparent PNG file. If it’s transparent, it might show up with an off-brand black background!
Final Step: Debugging
If you’ve uploaded your new Social Sharing Logo to Squarespace and it’s isn’t showing up on Facebook, it’s okay. Facebook takes a while to pick up on changes, so sometimes we have to give them a nudge.
It’s easy to get Facebook to scrape (pull) the new image across.
Head to the Facebook Sharing Debugger. Enter your url and then hit ‘Debug’.
NOTE: Sometimes you might have to hit ‘Debug’ or ‘Scrape Again’ a few times until your new logo appears.
Now you’re all set to share your beautiful new links on Facebook! If you’ve found this useful, or have any questions, leave a comment below to let me know!
